Meet the Winner of HIA Sunshine Coast Custom Build 1 million-1.5 million, Halcon House. The first of two winning LAWRIE homes this year at the 2024 HIA Awards, we were incredibly proud to have been recognised amongst so many great projects this year. A corner block, two-story home in Marcus Beach, this LAWRIE Group design and build project is one of a kind.
The Thing About Halcón
Halcón is a two-story home immediately set apart by its hanging gardens, warm stone walls, wooden floors, and curves throughout. Designed by LAWRIE. Group and Suncoast Building Design, the convex second story façade and curved interior stairwell drew context from the corner block.
The façade is a blend of Knotwood’s aluminium batten screens and concrete, with the second story balcony sporting a hanging garden. The first floor is
grounds the home with rich, earthy tones of its wrap-around rock cladding.
From the interior, the curved stairway serves to distinguish the kitchen and living spaces of the ground floor, while the sliding doors blur the lines between in- and out-
doors. The kitchen and dining areas ebb and flow naturally with the external ones, leading to the pool area and sprawling, landscaped back yard.
The second level curves from the staircase to an internal, wrap-around balcony with hanging pendant lighting. At the front, the garage door integrates Knotwood screens for a timber-look that complements the white screens on the second story.
Access for this build was one of the easiest we’ve had with a flat, corner plot–the challenge was in keeping it secure, rather than finding access points. The home was
designed and built around a mature gum tree which had its challenges but was well worth the effort. Notably, Halcon House was the third we’ve done with this client
which sped the process up and circumvented surprises. With experience comes trust, and we found it easy to get on the same page and stay there.
